A good skincare routine for oily skin doesn’t have to be 30-steps long or super expensive to do a great job. Contrary to what popular social media influencers want you to think, there are actually some great skincare products in your local store. Having acne, a lot of oil, or big pores doesn’t mean you have bad skin. There may just be a key ingredient you’re missing from your skincare routine. Also, it means you’re human- welcome to our club, babe!
It’s still natural and healthy for your face to have some moisture regardless of your skin type. And while it’s understandable that you don’t want to walk around looking greasy and shiny all day, a lot of products that are marketed toward oily skin are no good. They are super drying, making your face feel almost stiff from being so dehydrated. The most important part of finding a skincare routine for oily skin finding the perfect balance between the two.
That’s why I’m here to share the best routine with you. As a greasy skin girl myself (especially on that nose), I know the feeling. I have tried tons of different products to find the perfect blend for my skin type and this has been the best so far. Here’s my recommended skincare routine for oily skin.
Best Skincare Routine For Oily Skin And Large Pores
1. Cream Face Wash
Cream face wash is perfect for making your face feel clean and fresh without leaving too much oil or stripping away natural oils making it feel too dry. It is gentle on skin while still wiping away impurities. This one smells fresh but is not over fragranced and has a nice cooling sensation.
Routine: 1-2 Daily. Wet face with warm water place a few drops on your face, and rub in with lightly wet hands. You should start to feel the cooling affect after a minute or two. Wet a towel with warm water and wipe of cleanser. If you don’t like cream face wash (although I highly recommend it!) here’s the foaming version of the face wash.
2. Needly Toner Pads
You may have seen all the rage about Korean skin care on TikTok and it is worth the hype. Toner pads shrink pores and deep clean the skin even further than face wash does. This helps get the appearance of smooth, glass skin. There’s two sides to each cloth- a rough side to remove tough grease and grim and a smooth side to get the maximum soothing product. Start with the rough side and then go in with the smooth side for best results. Just look at the change they made to my skin!
Routine: Use one pad every other day after washing your face. This is a good starting point to make sure your skin doesn’t get overloaded. It also allows the package last longer. Upgrade the routine as needed
3. Olay Face Lotion
Just like the rest of your skin, you face needs to be moisturized and protected. This face lotion is sensitive skin friendly, deeply nourishing, and made with vitamins and SPF 30 to prevent wrinkles and keep you safe from dangerous, cancer-causing UV rays. It’s even safe for dark skin tones to use without turning ashy (yes, we need sunscreen too!). Just rub it in thoroughly and only use a couple of dots!
Routine: Use this moisturizer 1-2 times daily or a few more times on days when you need extra moisture.
4. Gua Sha and Jade Face Roller
Another TikTok favorite! Gua sha-ing is a simple step to add to your skincare routine that can make a big impact. It reduces inflammation, lymphatic drainage, and increases blood flow to the skin. In simpler terms, it gets rid of puffiness, drains the skin of toxins, and makes your face look snatched! You can even put your face roller in the freezer for extra benefits.
There are a few important rules of gua sha and face rolling you should know to get the best results:
- Both the gua sha and face roller should always be used in an upward direction to tighten the skin and avoid sagging.
- Never gua sha on dry skin. Use your favorite face oil or really silky lotion when using ensure your not pulling at the skin too hard or causing irritation.
- Pull the skin taut. In areas where you feel the skin pulling or being handled roughly, use your other hand to lightly pull the skin taut and smooth it out.
Routine: How often you face roll depends on how your skin reacts and what kind of results you want to see. Personally I use it in my skincare routine 2-3 times a week but it’s all up to you! Follow the facial directions given on the box for best results
5. Face Masks
Different face mask have different benefits on your skin. They are made with a combination of vitamins and nutrients to keep healthy skin! Some face mask refresh the skin, others detox toxins, soothe redness and itch, help with acne, or provide a boost of moisture. These are my favorite clay masks and these are my favorite sheet masks.
Routine: I try to use face mask 1-2 times a month in my skincare routine for oily skin, but you may need it more depending on your skin. Follow the instructions on the back of each mask for proper use.
