Hair removal is a very personal decision that is unique to all of us. Some of us like to go completely bald, some go all-natural, and the creative girls even make it into art pieces. Respect!
Well if hair removal is something you choose to do, you deserve to find which method works best and is most comfortable for you!
This review includes hair removal from all body parts- yes, even those down there.
Disclaimer: This is MY personal experience. Each method of hair removal may affect you differently based on a number of different things like hair texture, body heat, pain tolerance, and the rate of your hair growth.
Pre-Hair Removal Checklist
If you wanna avoid annoying things such as razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and when using any of these hair removal methods, make sure to follow these steps first.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the body’s surface and helps make sure your pores don’t get clogged once the hair is removed. It’s best to exfoliate at least a day before removing hair. It can be done in a lot of different ways like using a brush, sponge, or sugar scrub.
This scrub is gentle, makes skin soft, and smells SO good.
Moisturize
Moisturize the area at least a day before performing the hair removal. This ensures that the skin is hydrated and will help avoid irritation, cuts, and scars while removing the hair. A simple oil, like vitamin E oil or coconut oil, are great moisturizers and safe for all body parts.
Now that we’ve gone over the safety checklist, let’s find the best hair removal method for you!
Types of Hair Removal
Epilator
Pain: 7/10
Last time: 1-3 weeks
Pros: Epilating is a great alternative to waxing. The epilator looks similar to an electric shaver but removes hair from the root like wax. It has a spinning head equipped with a bunch of tweezer ends that grab the hairs and pluck them out. It also comes with an interchangeable shaver/trimmer head used to trim hairs before epilating to make sure they’re pulled precisely.
In my opinion, epilating is the best hair removal method for people who struggle with excessive sweat. Sweat and body heat don’t interfere with the epilating process much.
Cons: Epilating hurts. The tweezers on an epilator are quickly pulling each hair out one by one, unlike waxing where big areas of hair are being removed at the same time. A lot of people compare it to the feeling of getting a tattoo.
Tip: Make sure to hold the device at a 90-degree angle against the skin. Otherwise, it’ll end up shaving the hair rather than pulling it out.
Sugar Wax
Pain: 4/10
Last time: 2-4 weeks
Pros: Sugar wax is made from natural and simple ingredients that you probably have in your pantry right now. All you need is sugar, water, and lime – no harsh or dangerous chemicals to worry about. It is less aggressive on the skin than regular wax and can be used with strips (soft wax) or kneaded by hand (hard wax). The wax pulls hairs out by the root. If you don’t want to make the wax yourself (like I do), there are also pre-made options for purchase as well.
Cons: However, if you’re a sweaty or warm-bodied person, I do not recommend this for the summertime. Since the wax is made out of sugar, it will melt if it gets wet or warm and will turn to a sticky, honey-like texture. And trust me, you don’t wanna try to pull melted wax off. Ouch!
Hard Wax
Pain: 5/10
Last time: 2-4 weeks
Pros: Waxing has a very easy learning curve. The kit comes with pre-made wax beads, a warmer with preset temperatures, and waxing sticks. Once the wax is smeared on, it hardens and is ready to pull off. It is also not as easily affected by sweat or body heat as sugaring is.
Cons: Some downsides about waxing are that it is not made with natural ingredients and it has to be warmed to be used. Warming wax creates a longer waiting time and can end in painful burns if it’s done incorrectly. It’s important to always test a small portion of the wax on the inside of your wrist before spreading it on the rest of your body.
Electric Shaver
Pain: 0/10
Last time: 1-2 Days
Pros: If you’re someone who prefers to shave or doesn’t like permanent hair removal, this is for you. This electric shaver is quicker and more effective than your regular razor and can be used dry or in the shower, so it can easily become a part of your daily routine. It gets a very close shave that’ll have your skin baby soft and smooth. There’s also an aluminum covering over the razor which makes it less likely to cut yourself and more gentle on skin.
Cons: If you want long-lasting smooth skin but are prone to getting irritation or ingrown hairs from shaving, I do not recommend this for you. Most likely, you’ll have to use this every day or every other day if you want to stay hair-free, which can really irritate sensitive skin.
